Between 1903 and 1907, Maffei built 39 locomotives Class S 3/5 N (road number 3301-3328/3330-3340) for K.Bay.Sts.B..
When the DRG was formed, they took only 20 engines which became Class 17.4 and were numbered 17 401 to 17 420.
S 3/5 N pulled Express trains from München to Nürnberg.
